History of Parkway United Church of Christ 1930 – Merger betweens two denominations: Congregational Church and Christian Church 1931 – Ours was the first “new” congregation in the country to form under the merged Congregational Christian Church. Services were held at the Winston-Salem, YMCA. 1933 – Groundbreaking for the 1st Congregational Church of Winston-Salem on Academy Street. 1934 - Invited the newly formed St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church to share our building until their own construction was completed 1957 – A new denomination called The United Church of Christ was formed as a result of a merger between the Congregational Christian Church and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. 1960 – New Church building was constructed on the corner of Irving Street and Silas Creek Parkway. Name was changed to “Parkway United Church of Christ.” 1970 – 1st church expansion: added a small Fellowship Hall to the back of the church. 1984 – Former seminary and college professor Tom Mann joined Parkway UCC as Pastor. 1997 – 2nd church expansion: added current Fellowship Hall – “the tree house in the woods.” 2007 – Currently discussing plans for Chancel
renovation. |
